There are many different genres of shooting gamesavailable online, and the history of one of the most popular subgenres, the first person shooter game goes all the way back to the 1970s. Shooter games are a type of action game in which the speed and accuracy of players is tested, especially their ability to react quickly. Most commonly the idea of the game is that the player must find the way through a series of levels and stay alive for as long as possible by shooting opponents or obstacles that form a danger to the player. In most shooter games you'll be armed with a long-range weapon, such as a gun, for instance.
Maze War
One of the progenitors of first-person perspectiveshooting gamesis Maze War. In 1972-73, Steve Colley wrote a programme that showed movement through a maze from a first person perspective. This was exciting at first, but got boring quite quickly, until a friend came up with the idea of putting other people in the maze whome you could run into. After that it didn't take them long to figure out that being able to shoot each other for points would make the game far more exciting than just running into other people in the maze. And so the first-person shooter was born, and other networked shooters soon followed.
Spasim
Another early first-person persepctive shooting game from the early to mid 1970s was Spasim. In this game space flight was simulated, players could fly around four planetary systems and encounter other player, who appeared as simple wire-frame space ships. Both Spasim and Maze War featured tile-based movement. Players could only move one tile at a time, backward, forward, or turn 90 degrees right and left. Both games were not available to consumers.
Scrolling Shooters
Until the sudden rise in popularity of the first-person perspective shooting game with the release of Wolfenstein 3D and the more controversial Doom, the most popular shooter games that dominated the market in the 1980s were mostly scrolling shooters in which the player moves in one direction (the scrolling screen often forces the player to keep going ahead) and most shoot a way though many enemies and obstacles or dodge them to stay alive. But in 1992 the market changed forever.
First-Person Shooters
The first-person shooter is now among the most well known subgenres of shooting games. And classics from the early 90s, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, immediately come to mind. Wolfenstein 3D, which was released in 1992, is generally considered to be the game that really established the genre. Doom, which was based on the Wolfenstein 3D archetype, propelled the first-person shooter into mainstream popularity.
Play Shooter Games Online
These and other types of shooting games are still very popular online. One popular format that is based on the first-person shooter, but may also borrow some elements from the third-person shooter subgenre, is the sniper game. In this game you must carry out missions by shooting targets from a concealed spot with a tactical rifle. You can play lots of great sniper games, scrolling shooters, and third- and first-person shooters (including flash remakes of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D) at Games.co.za! Have fun!
