For the upcoming 2011 Rugby World Cup, Springboks flanker Schalk Burger is facing severe fitness problems. During the Stormers' Super Rugby Semi-final loss to the Crusaders, his thumb has been injured.
During 29-10 loss at the Newlands, Burger has been forced out because of broken and dislocated thumb. He will not be able to play upto six weeks and would not participate in the opening Tri-Nations of South Africa against Australia.
Stormers injury has been confirmed and waiting for the assessments of his scans. The remaining Springboks squad will undergo medical assessments as well as training in Cape town. Vice Captain of Stormers, Jean de Villiers also said that Burger's exit was a big blow for them. De Villiers also said, "It is a disruption, but injuries are part of the game and we need to adapt to that. He is a massive player to lose in a game like this, but that is rugby."
On 9th July, for the upcoming Tri-Nations series, South Africa's squad will be named for the first two tests.
